For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Sarah stood with one hand gripping the strap of her purse.
Eleanor looked from her daughter to Eric.
Richard was still beside the stage, surrounded by financial documents that had been intended to announce his company's salvation.
Now they looked like evidence.
Eleanor finally broke the silence.
“Who is Chloe?”
Eric rubbed his forehead.
“Mom, not here.”
“Here is exactly where you should answer me.”
His eyes hardened.
“This has nothing to do with Richard's company.”
Thomas interrupted.
“It has everything to do with Richard's company if company funds were mixed with money taken from your wife.”
Eric turned toward him.
“You don't understand.”
Thomas's voice remained calm.
“I understand enough to know I will not invest another dollar until an independent audit tells me what happened.”
Richard stepped forward.
“If you pull out, Nebula collapses.”
Thomas looked at him.
“Your company was already collapsing. You simply found someone else's money to hide the damage.”
Richard's jaw tightened.
“That isn't fair.”
Thomas gestured toward the documents.
“Fair left the room when you accepted money you knew wasn't yours.”
The investigators continued collecting records.
One asked Richard for access to the company's financial systems.
Another requested copies of the loan application and communications with the broker.
The man who had helped arrange the forged guarantee had already been identified through the documents.
I watched Eric standing apart from everyone.
He seemed smaller now.
Not physically.
Just stripped of the confidence that had carried him through Saturday morning.
I remembered him standing in our kitchen, smiling as he told me Paris would be good for me.
I wondered whether he had already known exactly what would happen after I left.
“Clara.”
I looked at Eva.
She held another envelope.
“This is for him.”
I nodded.
She walked over and handed it to Eric.
He looked at the front.
“Divorce papers?”
“And notice of the legal actions related to the financial misconduct and forged documents.”
He looked at me.
“You're really doing this.”
“Yes.”
“You could have talked to me.”
I almost laughed.
“I heard you talking.”
His eyes dropped.
“You were supposed to be in Paris.”
“I know.”
“You lied to me.”
“You lied about everything that mattered.”
He took a breath.
“I was going to fix it.”
“You were going to file for divorce and accuse me of stealing.”
“I panicked.”
“You planned it.”
He had no answer.
Eleanor approached me.
Her champagne glass was gone.
Without it, she looked older.
“Clara, please.”
I waited.
“This has gone too far.”
I stared at her.
“Saturday morning, you were celebrating.”
She swallowed.
“We didn't understand the whole situation.”
“You understood enough to discuss dividing my home.”
“Eric said—”
“Eric said exactly what he wanted you to believe.”
She looked toward her son.
Then back at me.
“Richard could lose everything.”
I nodded.
“So could I.”
“But you still have the house.”
The words came out softly.
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
She wasn't sorry that they had tried.
She was sorry they had failed.
“You were worried about my house when you thought it would become yours.”
She looked away.
“I was thinking about the family.”
I shook my head.
“You were thinking about the family after deciding I didn't count as part of it.”
Eleanor's eyes filled.
“Eric was desperate.”
“So was I.”
My voice remained steady.
“I was lying on the bathroom floor listening to all of you decide what would happen to my life.”
She looked down.
“I didn't know you were there.”
“That doesn't make it better.”
Nearby, Richard was arguing with Sarah.
“You should never have mentioned Chloe.”
Sarah snapped back.
“You were the one asking questions about the money.”
“You could have kept your mouth shut.”
“I've kept my mouth shut for two years.”
That sentence silenced them both.
I heard it.
So did the investigators.
Sarah looked frightened.
Richard realized too late what she had admitted.
Eleanor turned toward her.
“Two years?”
Sarah pressed her lips together.
Eleanor's voice trembled.
“How long have you known?”
Sarah finally looked at Eric.
He wouldn't meet her eyes.
“I knew he was seeing someone.”
Eleanor stared at her son.
“And you?”
Eric said nothing.
I opened the second ledger.
“More than one hundred and forty thousand dollars was spent on Chloe.”
Eleanor covered her mouth.
“Where?”
“Hotels. Jewelry. Restaurants. Flights.”
Eric whispered my name.
I ignored him.
Some of the charges had been made during dates when Eric had told me he was working late.
Others matched business trips he had claimed were required for clients.
I remembered those nights suddenly.
The cold dinners I had eaten alone.
The messages saying he would be home late.
The flowers that appeared afterward.
I had interpreted them as guilt over being absent.
Now I understood they had been camouflage.
Sarah looked at the floor.
“I only helped him because he said he was trying to protect everyone.”
I looked at her.
“Protect everyone from what?”
She had no answer.
“From me?”
“No.”
“Then from the truth?”
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
There it was.
Not an apology.
Not forgiveness.
Just an admission.
Thomas walked over with one of the investigators.
“We're calling an emergency board meeting.”
Richard shook his head.
“Thomas, please.”
“No.”
“We can fix this.”
“You've been saying that since I walked into this room.”
Richard's shoulders fell.
Thomas continued.
“The company will undergo an independent forensic review. No new borrowing. No asset transfers. No executive withdrawals without authorization.”
Richard looked devastated.
Nebula had been his obsession for years.
Now it was slipping away because he had decided my money was easier to obtain than honest financing.
The investigators asked me about the missing funds.
I explained everything I knew.
I gave them the statements.
The recordings.
The transfer histories.
The loan documents.
The property records.
I did not exaggerate anything.
I didn't need to.
The numbers were already speaking clearly.
By ten o'clock, the ballroom had become an evidence-gathering site.
Phones were being examined.
Financial records were being preserved.
Accounts were being restricted.
The broker connected to the forged guarantee was being questioned.
There was no dramatic struggle.
No one ran.
No one threw a punch.
Reality did not need theatrics.
It simply arrived and refused to leave.
Eric stood near the window.
I walked toward him.
He looked exhausted.
“I never wanted this.”
I stopped a few feet away.
“You wanted the result.”
“I wanted to help my family.”
“You wanted to keep their company alive with my money.”
“I thought I could replace it.”
“And Chloe?”
He looked away.
I waited.
Finally he said, “That wasn't supposed to happen.”
“What wasn't?”
“The expenses.”
I stared at him.
“You're talking about hotel rooms and jewelry as if they appeared by accident.”
He closed his eyes.
“I made mistakes.”
“An affair is a mistake. Taking hundreds of thousands of dollars and planning to frame your wife is a series of decisions.”
His face tightened.
“I loved you.”
“I know you believed you did.”
He looked at me.
“That isn't the same thing.”
I let the silence remain.
Then I walked away.
Behind me, Eleanor began arguing with Richard.
Sarah was crying quietly.
Thomas was speaking to the investigators.
Eva was reviewing the next legal steps.
For the first time since I had heard Eric's voice through that bathroom vent, I felt the room become still inside me.
The fear was gone.
What remained was grief.
Not grief for the man standing behind me.
Grief for the ten years I had spent believing that trust alone could protect a marriage.
The investigation would continue.
The divorce would continue.
The missing money would have to be traced.
Nebula Systems would face consequences.
Eric would have to answer for what he had done.
But one question remained in my mind.
How much of the $480,000 could ever be recovered?
Eva looked at me as though she had read my thoughts.
“We'll find out.”
I nodded.
Then I looked once more at the people who had gathered in my home believing I would be too far away to stop them.
They had thought Paris was an escape route.
Instead, it had become the trap.
And before the day ended, every secret they had tried to bury would have to come into the light.
